TAILS Horse Pics

Pickles came to us in early Nov. 2010 looking like a skeleton for an anatomy class.

Pickles 'Before' 11/5/10

This is what now 25 yr old Pickles looked like when he arrived Nov. 2010. Skinny, tired, arthritic, swollen sheath & teeth badly in need of floating.  He has a history of foundering & has the scars of healed leg sores to prove it. He was fed mostly alfalfa (aka cow food – yuck!) over about the last 5-6 years or more. To the best of our knowledge her had little exercise & was over weight (Thus founder) He was back in shape, adopted & 3 years later came back to Tails in the condition you see in the 1st picture

Pickles & Flower 'After' 3/15/11

Here’s Pickles & Flower in their winter coats only 4 months later after eating good horse food - lots of Bermuda hay.

Flower, an Appaloosa mix, is about 15 years old. Angel rescued her from the killer buyers at local auction about 5 years ago. She was underweight, had abscesses on her feet & was pregnant with a baby by her side. It took sometime for Angel to gain her trust, but in time they bonded. Flower has pain in her legs ~ too much pain to be ridden. We treat her with Equine Leg Magic, MSM, photonic light treatments & energy work. She can be seen periodically running & kicking & having fun. Now, gentle as a lamb, after 2 adoptions that didn’t ‘work out’ Flower will spend her remaining time loving to be loved by kids & anyone who needs to spend time with a sweet horse.

Moon is our Arabian prince. The arthritis in his back legs prevents him from being ridden on a trail, but he can tolerate walking around the yard with a kid on his back. At about 24, he is still a playful guy. He loves to ‘lip’ our hands and push us around a little. Apparently the person who dropped him off at Tails Rescue mistook his playfulness as something negative & claimed he was crazy. In spite of his sometimes sore stifles he can be seen in the early morning rearing up, chasing & playing with Moe, our youngster. This has actually help Moon rebuild some musculature.

Moe was left at TAILS by a man who said he was moving, but would be back to get him in 30 days. That was March 2010. The history he gave us was that Moe had ‘not been handled or nor had he a halter on. We could tell by the glue residue  on his rump that he had been through the auction. He was so frightened, we were unable to even touch him. His evolution since he arrived has been a long slow process.

Storm is only about 20 years old, but due to past trauma, he usually carries himself as if he is much older. In spite of his slow pace, he runs the show here. He is the head hancho of this little herd.  When he first arrived he was a bit thin 3 years ago when he 1st arrived he was still had a pretty shaggy winter coat. by summer he looked pretty sleek.by summer he looked pretty sleek. He seemed to have many sore spots… all a result of his trauma we’re sure. He had difficulty eating because of the damage to the nerves leading to his mouth. He needed to tip his head up & let pellets & senior feed fall back down his throat. That appears to have almost totally resolved. We believe he has also developed Cushings Syndrome. With Chaste Tree Berry, he seems to be improving.

Selena was a PMU mare from ND. If you don’t know about PMU mares, just do a search on google. Not a good life for a horse. She apparently had never been ridden & when she 1st came she was very shy & hard to catch. That is not the case now! We have stopped riding her for now though as she is not sound. She has a limp & apparently pain. She is missing part of her tongue. Of course we don’t know for a fact how it happened, but can assume some sort of an accident was the cause. Selena is a gentle solid paint. She is not sound as she has a limp & pain in her right shoulder. We have addressed it with many modalities, but so far no permanent results.

Freckles was taken in by Tails about 5 years ago. Apparently she was at a rescue near Surprise & was confiscated along with other horses by the sheriff’s department. She was severely underweight & had a lame back leg. Angel fattened her up to a healthy weight in no time. After  she was moved to Dave & Candy’s facility in Chino Valley she was soon sponsored by Colleen Milam. Colleen’s generosity enabled us to get her teeth floated, her broken one removed, her injured back left leg x-rayed and remove the large skin tag from another old injury on her nose that was irritated by a halter.
